The History of Sunnybrook Hospital: Battle to Greatness brings to life this tumultuous history: as a veteran’s hospital, born of the passionate battles launched by angry citizens to build better hospitals for our Second World War veterans; as a community and teaching hospital, rebelling and innovating to stay alive; and, finally, as a full-fledged academic health sciences centre, struggling to maintain its identity and focus.
In The History of Sunnybrook Hospital, you will find the stories of pioneers, rebels, and leaders, and the pivotal events and innovations that have shaped Sunnybrook’s character and legacy.

Peter's work and role at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre which led to three chapters in the book published about his efforts:
“So many remarkable developments took place under Peter Ellis’s tenure as COO and CEO. What had been built under his stewardship attracted the talent, the institutions, and the cachet that, for Sunnybrook, had sometimes seemed illusive before. Now its success went beyond the trauma and cancer units. By developing or pioneering the early adoption of new methodologies in research, management and teaching, Sunnybrook was able to achieve remarkable results in a variety of health care areas and, so, adopt a leadership among Canadian Hospitals. Despite the fact that the provincial government was on a fast downward spiral because of economic and political pressures, Sunnybrook was still shooting ahead, all guns-a-blazing. As David Naylor puts it, by the end of 1995, ‘Sunnybrook had real fire power’. The integration of the three pillars, treatment, research, and teaching, through the program- management model, allowed each to thrive in an integrated fashion, and all were leveraged within the programs to enhance care for patients. This value was very distinctly a Sunnybrook phenomenon at this time. According to Martin Barkin it remains as one of the greatest contributions of Sunnybrook to Canadian health care “
